Take the time to experience a crucial part of the history of our country, slavery and the people that made this nation the more perfect union that it is today.

Until it was opened to the public in 1938, the Mayhew Cabin was nearly always used as a home. It has a well documented history as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Today, visitors feel they are walking into the cabin 150 years ago.
Slavery was an explosive issue when Nebraska Territory was created. The Mayhews were a part of that era and left an indelible imprint on the history of that time. Experience what enslaved people and
their staunch supporters endured before and during the Civil War.

Walk through the Mayhew Cabin and travel down the underground cave to better understand what the remarkable flight from slavery entailed.

The Mayhew Cabin/John Brown’s Cave site is Closed for the season. Please call 402-873-3115 to set up an appointment at least 48 hours in advance. Thank you.

Walking tunnel Update
Currently, we are fundraising to complete the renovations of the walking tunnel. Right now we have a total of $153,950 pledged and/or received from the Wirth Family Foundation, Kimmel Foundation, Nelson Foundation, and Kropp Foundation. We still need to raise $288,050 to complete the project. Yes, this project will cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars range. If you would like to donate toward the project, please send a check to our address (2012 4th Corso, Nebraska City, NE) and note that it is for the "Walking tunnel project." Thank you for your support.
