Great News!

Mayhew Cabin acquires
old John Brown’s Cave
Gift Shop
The Mayhew Cabin Foundation is now the owner of the 2010 4th Corso
(adjacent) property and brick building. This area used to be the
Gift Shop and Museum for the John Brown’s Cave attraction, but was
separated from the Mayhew Cabin’s property when the foundation was
formed in late 2001. In essence, the Mayhew Cabin Foundation will be
for the first time the owner of the old gift shop in its short
history. This expansion for the historic museum will give it the
opportunity to develop the story of the Underground Railroad in the
region and the Mayhew family’s involvement.
The Mayhew Cabin operated the last two years without a museum
building or even proper facilities. They had to adjust programs held
at the cabin and adapt the interpretation of the site. The Mayhew
Cabin is going to remodel parts of the brick building to ensure
greater visitor experience. This will include a small gift shop
area, exhibits on the Underground Railroad, and a theater area for
presentations. The purchase of the property was made possible by a
grant from the Wirth Foundation in Nebraska City. It is a great
thing for the Mayhew Cabin, but also for the community of Nebraska
City. This great historic site can further develop toward its
mission of educating the public about the Underground Railroad in
the region. The Mayhew Cabin plans to have it open at the start of
the museum season on April 30 (Arbor Day). If you would like to know
more information about this story, please contact the Mayhew Cabin
at 402-873-3115.
